Tom Gerrard is a globally recognised Australian artist with an impressive catalogue of work spanning over 25 years. His painting has evolved from street-art installations around Melbourne in the mid-90s, to exhibiting at desirable destinations such as the National Gallery of Australia, StolenSpace (London), La Colombe d’Or (France), Fluorescent Smogg (Barcelona) and RVCA Gallery (Tokyo).
Gerrard is known for his ability to capture local identities and narrative accounts of contemporary life through his stylised caricatures and illustrations of place-based architecture and flora. His artwork draws inspiration from his personal connection with Australian suburbia and the stories of its residents, characterised by simple shapes and lines, and a minimalistic colour palette.
Gerrard has travelled extensively throughout his career, painting internationally at mural festivals and also on the streets throughout the Americas, Europe, Scandinavia and Asia. For each of his murals, Gerrard’s passion for bringing out the spirit of place and community has led him to work closely with local people to translate their culture from feelings and words to brushstrokes and images.
Collaborating with some of the biggest names in contemporary urban art, Gerrard’s bold, fluid style and inquisitive, personable nature has forged some dynamic artistic partnerships, with striking results. He is also the creator of Bench Talk Podcast series, featuring the brightest and best contemporary artists from across the globe. Currently working from his studio in Melbourne, Gerrard focuses his practice on Australiana and his natural surroundings.
