Breakups and Breakdowns: Chapter I

Original Artwork by by James Wilson

In partnership with Studio Supply, 1xRUN is excited to present an exclusive collection of original artwork by Australian artist James Wilson! Drawing inspiration from Slice of Life comics, Wilson explores teenage angst, intimacy, curiosity, and misanthropy through a series of bold works of pen on paper.

"'Breakups and Breakdowns' explores the awkward moments that follow in the aftermath of intimate relationships. Illustrating the torturous struggles young adults undergo drawing out the painful experiences in their efforts to delay the inevitable, impending conclusions, these artworks piece together broken story lines and broken hearts.

"Despite these cynical themes, this body of work finds harmony with a playful attitude, depicting situational clumsiness and a youthful angst which often results in our endearing attempts to strive for personal growth and maturation.

About this Collection
"'Breakups and Breakdowns' explores the awkward moments that follow in the aftermath of intimate relationships. Illustrating the torturous struggles young adults undergo drawing out the painful experiences in their efforts to delay the inevitable, impending conclusions, these artworks piece together broken story lines and broken hearts.

"The tonal inspiration for this collection borrows the format of 'Slice of Life' comics, exploring misanthropic attitudes and the voyeuristic insights of tipsy house share couch confessions. The characters are an amalgamation of the different cartoons Wilson watched as a kid, the paintings that surround him, decorating the city walls, and Wilson’s real-life emotionally stunted peers that find themselves drawn to the dysfunctional recesses of the art community.

"Aesthetically, the work takes a more intimate look at the subjects by embracing the rawness contained within the bold marks of pen on paper, rather than attempting to polish the image with layers of colour and paint.

"Despite these cynical themes, this body of work finds harmony with a playful attitude, depicting situational clumsiness and a youthful angst which often results in our endearing attempts to strive for personal growth and maturation.
