In February Madsteez partnered with East Village Walls to paint the mural on Yat Sen Intermediate School in Chinatown, New York. The subject of the mural was voted on by the students and they chose to honor Kobe’s legacy. Madsteez worked with photographer Atiba Jefferson who captured one of the very few studio shots of Gianna Bryant for the image that was used for the mural.
“Kobe and Gigi’s death hit close to home on so many levels. I’d spend the last 20 years in Orange County, CA and 10 of them 2 miles from where Kobe lived. I’d always see him at the grocery store or the gas station and he'd always comment on how much he liked my rims. He eventually came to my Newport Beach studio when I did a Nike commissioned mural of him on 180 skateboards. He was super appreciative, a humble dude and he loved it. His work ethic and dedication to his craft inspires me to put every ounce of energy into everything I do.” - Madsteez
