"I initially did a big wall piece of this particular composition. I used to paint a lot of fairground scenes when I was younger so the Disney Amusement rides seemed a natural way to go. Given what they represent, they were quite appropriate for my ‘2 Worlds’ theme which I’ve been based a good few street pieces, murals, and live paint events on over the last year or so.
The work in my ‘2 Worlds’ theme portrays figures from Indonesian or African tribes, in ceremonial dress, placed in alien settings, such as Western cityscapes or amusement parks. The juxtaposition of these elements is intended to emphasize the gap between these worlds. I am keen to portray the strength and beauty of the tribal people and their traditional make-up and decorative elements, set against more mundane or bleak images of Western society. In this work I pose the question of how we measure the quality of our existence in a world full of cultural and financial differences. The age-old, spiritual, tribal, and organic meets the corporate monsters of the West (such as Disney) in a riot of color and intensity, but behind all these visual games is the frightening reality that dominant cultures are encroaching on every corner of the world, causing ecological and environmental vandalism." - Dale Grimshaw
This RUN comes signed, numbered and with a Certificate of Authenticity from Dale Grimshaw and 1xRUN.
Dale has established himself over a period of six years as being one of the most respected and individual artists on the London art scene. Collectors and buyers have appreciated his distinctively direct and passionate style internationally.
Dale was born in Lancashire. He studied at Blackburn College of Art and then went on to achieve his Bachelor of Fine Art degree at Middlesex University.
As a student Dale won the Apthorp Fund for young artists and then went on to win the Liquitex Student Award in the USA. As a result, he was able to exhibit at the Academy of Arts in New York and in the Cable and Wireless exhibition in London.
After a break from his artwork, when he pursued a career in the music industry, Dale returned to painting and was quickly featured in the TV show ‘A Brush With Fame’. In 2006 Dale was a finalist in the both Pride in the House and Liberte D’expression competitions.
Dale had his first solo show, Echoes And Exorcisms, at Signal Gallery Hoxton, London in April 2008. This show was extremely successful and he rapidly became one of the leading up-and- coming artists in the London Urban Art scene. This led him to being invited to take part in a number of festivals across the UK including 2008 the Supercans Festival and also Upfest in Bristol in 2008 and 2009, where his outdoor work created quite a stir. More recently, he has contributed to the Street Art scene with a series of striking and dramatic woodcuts prints that he has pasted up in London and Europe.
Dales' next two solo shows ‘Heart In Darkness' (2009) and 'Arcana' (2010) were both very well received, leading to a large amount of press coverage, including a thirty page feature in Mynameis magazine. His most recent solo show ‘Semi Detached’ at Signal Gallery saw a considerable progression in his style and technique, as well as being a very personal statement.
He has contributed works to several high profile charitable events, notably the Street Art awards where his work was chosen to feature in an article in The Independent newspaper and on the BBC. Dale’s work has been seen in a number of group shows internationally in Paris, Berlin and in the USA.
In 2012 Dale has been busy on a number of large scale projects as well as preparing for his recent solo show, 'Moreish' at Signal Gallery in November. This show was featured in a number of press outlets, including Juxtapoz, Arrested Motion and The Londonist. Outside he has been working on large pieces at Sun, Sea and Spray in Blackpool, at the Whitecross Street Party, at the Liquitex art event in West London and in Zetland House, Hoxton.
