We are excited to welcome back Victor Castillo for a double release of Flying High & Planeta Infierno. These original paintings were shown at Victor's solo exhibition Under Heavy Measures at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles, California. The title refers to Castillo’s feeling that the scales of power have become oppressive: inequality grows, the protests increase globally, and the brutality with which these demonstrations are repressed is also amplified.
"Both pieces were part of my solo show Under Heavy Measures at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in 2013. The show was divided into two parts, paintings on canvas and paintings on paper. Making paintings on paper gave me the opportunity to explore a different kind of light. The paintings on canvas are in general dark, but the papers are bright and colorful. These paintings are full of emotions and the prints look just like the original pieces. I’m happy with the quality.” - Victor Castillo
Victor Castillo tells stories in his paintings. As if it were a contemporary chronicle, his work appropriates the narrative logic of illustrations for children’s stories, and the aesthetics of classic animations, to present us with allegories about human nature and current affairs. His humorous and colorful work has also been described as political poetry coming from the Latin American experience. Victor was born in Santiago, Chile in 1973, moved to Barcelona, Spain in 2006, and then to Los Angeles, California in 2010, where he currently resides.
