ABOUT THIS ART:
This RUN comes framed and ready to hang.
This September 21st through the 28th, Murals In The Market makes a triumphant return to Detroit’s Historic Eastern Market as more than 50+ local and international artists will be painting live throughout the district over the course of eight days in the third year of the city’s only international mural festival. Adding to Detroit’s unique history of place making and public art, we are proud to announce our new partnership with the William Davidson Foundation and welcome back the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Eastern Market Corporation for this magnificent public arts festival.
"The pieces themselves are a combination of head portraits painted in what I would say are my signature style and then also a series of smaller abstract works that signify the idea of migration through the Pacific, both in a historic and recent sense. The model for the portraits was my friend Sereima aka Stelly, who’s Sydney based and of Fijian descent. To me she really represents the changing face of the Pacific in many ways. Following on from a really successful show in Sydney, ‘The Evolving Face’ I wanted to move away from the mugshot poses of the previous body and bring more attitude and exuberance and Sereima was perfect because she is the absolute embodiment of those things." - Askew
ABOUT Askew One:
Askew is a multi-disciplinary artist mostly renowned for his graffiti art paintings. Widely regarded as one of the New Zealand graffiti scene’s driving forces, he has managed to remain at the forefront of the movement (both in New Zealand and throughout the world) whilst working tirelessly behind the scenes in a diverse array of projects.
Askew’s indoor canvas works are influenced by double exposure photography, bold illustrative lines reflective of comic books and the graphic power of the letter. This is also seen in his public mural works in which his attraction to ‘bigger is better’ is highly precedent.
With an abundance of achievements and experiences almost 20 years in the graffiti scene which include a guest artist invite to Primary Flight - Art Basel Miami and taking out two consecutive ‘Write 4 Gold’ world titles as part of TMD crew (who remain undefeated), Askew is also versed in graphic design, illustration, photography, publishing, music and moving image. A self-taught, self-sufficient one-man army with no formal art qualifications behind him, Askew is an artist schooled by life itself.
