"These original acrylic paintings were created as part of my solo exhibition Ectoplasm back in 2008. We created some oversized editions for the show at the time, but as we look back we wanted to create some accessible editions so everybody can help us celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the exhibition.

Ectoplasm was a result of my fascination with the world of the Spiritualist movement in America and abroad. The advent of photography coincided with the tragedy of two consecutive world wars and a deep cultural need to connect with fallen loved ones was answered by and sometimes exploited by mediums, psychics and occasionally photographers. It’s a much deeper story that warrants a further dive if people are so inclined but my paintings in this series from ten years ago were reflections on this strange and fascinating time in human history. Ectoplasm was considered “spirit matter” and was produced by mediums as evidence of a kind of contact with the spirit world. I liked the connection I felt with this mythology and my own creative process, which at times has felt like I was visiting other worlds and bringing back relics as evidence of my experience. Hence the paintings." - Brandon Boyd

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Brandon Boyd’s work as a singer, songwriter, both as a solo artist and with his platinum-selling rock band, is well documented and universally acclaimed. But now his other life’s work -- that of a painter -- has been garnering increasing attention and devoted audiences of its own.

In his painting and drawings, Boyd reveals a personal, freeform, ambiguous kind of visual style that focuses on magic, serendipity, curiosity and mystery. Describing his art-making process as a kind of “blissful, familiar trance,” Boyd’s works carry both the evidence of the beautiful chaos and the power of revealing the narratives inside of it. His images are constructed by chance through colorful ink spills and the contents of his own travel journals. As songs might come to him in a dream, so he discovers the vibrant, witty, eccentrically classical constellations of shape and circumstance that hide in plain view or emerge from his own quieted mind through another kind of sight.
