"This piece was created for the 'Giant Robot Biennale 4' exhibition at the Japanese National American Museum in Los Angeles. It is part of my americana signage series from 2015. I enjoy the decayed signs that I saw around the cities in different states. I think there is something magical about them and I like seeing objects and items which I can feel the sense of time and history.
Instead of having the signage represent commercial name of services, I decided to use the phrasing or English wording that I enjoy and have a positive message of some sort. For this I picked a song from one of my favorite Japanese punk band Hi-Standard. They covered the classic song 'California Dreamin’' and turned into a punk song." - Yoskay Yamamoto
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Born and raised in Toba, Japan,
Yoskay Yamamoto moved to the United States at the age of 15. A self-trained illustrator, Yamamoto's artistic tastes expanded as he fell in love with the urban culture of the West coast. Yamamoto discovered a way to fuse the two different cultural backgrounds together into his work. Yamamoto nostalgically blends pop iconic characters from his new Western home with traditional and mythical Japanese elements, balancing his Asian heritage with urban pop art.
