ABOUT THIS ART:
“Lately, I’ve felt a new sense of ownership over my identity as a queer art punk baby demon manic pixie goth cowboy, and I’ve been celebrating that through art. I wanted to capture the feeling of being a ~*free bitch*~ and I know no freer feeling than sweating in leather on my bike.” –– Caroline Caldwell
Caroline Caldwell is an artist and writer based in New York City. Gun for hire.
Caroline's artwork ranges from layered and subtle, to very blunt meditations on home, self-worth, the absurd, and rebellion. Sometimes she'll spend weeks on one drawing, working through ideas that are decades deep. Her series of structurally unstable homes are how she processes the trauma of growing up in an unstable and sometimes dangerous household. Other times, the best thing she produces in a month is a quick doodle in response to yesterday’s catcalls. In either case, her artworks are diary entries.
Much of Caroline's artistic upbringing and education has come through artist assistant roles she's held. She has helped some of her creative role models craft their works, ranging from small canvases, to massive museum installations. Through these opportunities, she got a professional education in both technical skills and how to operate as part of a team to make a creative vision come to fruition.
In 2017, she co-curated "Art in Ad Places," a year-long guerrilla campaign replacing outdoor advertisements with artwork.
