ABOUT THIS ART:
Ever notice that the word DEFIANCE is practically synonymous with DENIAL? In the healthiest sense - as if both words echo a reluctance to accept things as they are or to passively acquiesce to a moribund status quo. Fitting therefore that the Canadian artist who chose the latter word for a public name is here expressing a rebellious spirit of optimism and once again giving a refreshing dash of visual irony to one of street art's most recurring motifs. Like many of his peers working in the same medium.

DENIAL recognizes that the urban landscape - that wonderland, playground, battleground of a post-industrial world - is actually richer in hope than we're inclined to imagine; and this particular piece (copies of which he intends to place throughout the environs of Toronto) is a clear expression of that sentiment. The message printed so boldly (significantly on a hand-made object) is both a plea and an impatient command; take the materials you find, the discarded detritus of the past, and revitalize every possibility they still possess. DENIAL has (no surprise here) MADE something beautiful.

In 2000 he adopted the moniker ‘DENIAL’ as a means of poking fun at advertising, politics and media messages that contemporary society is often ‘in denial’ about. Since then he has maintained an ongoing global street-campaign of over 500, 000 stickers, placards and murals, using the alpha-numeric characters ‘D3N!@L’. Intended as a conceptual means of marketing absurdism, DENIAL also challenges traditional notions of graffiti and public art through his bold and often satirical visual subversions.

In 2012 DENIAL started ‘Free 4 All Walls’ which is the largest public art project of its kind in South West Ontario. Bringing artists from around the world to beautify and re-invigorate public walls around Windsor, the government funded program has been a huge success in supporting the local community and promoting the value of street-art in contemporary society. Invited artists who have painted murals include: Nychos (Austria), Bask (USA), Omen(Canada), Ben Frost (Australia), Nosego(USA), Persue (USA), Rime (USA), Above (USA), Elicser (Canada), High 5 (Canada), Nekoes (USA), Labrona (Canada), Gaia (USA), Kwest (Canada), Spud (Canada), Earthcrusher (Canada) , Czr Prz (USA), Chou (Canada), Uber5000 (Canada) and XRAY (Canada). The project intends to continue well into 2014.
