Elle Talks Inspiration Behind Her Classic Wheatpaste Poster For Her 1xDebut

1x: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Elle: The ELLE poster was one of the first things that I designed under my alias. I began wheatpasting them up around New York about 5 years ago and then brought them with me whenever I traveled. So they went up all over the world, Malaysia, France, Israel, LA, Mexico, Germany, everywhere I could get them. It was inspired by Obey propaganda style repetition to remember. The poster can be found in Mini Cooper Ads, the Robin Williams film The Angriest Man in Brooklyn, and most recently, hanging behind Halsey during her press conference for her upcoming New Americana show at Madison Square Garden. This is the first time that the ELLE poster has been printed both as a letterpress and as a limited edition run.

In Spring 2014 she had a collaborative exhibition with renowned photographer Martha Cooper.

Most recently ELLE has been focusing on ad-takeovers with keys she received from the Public Ad Campaign, hand cutting colored mylar to create collages of images that she then illegally inserts into bus shelters in place of advertisements.

ELLE was one of twelve artists globally commissioned by IKEA to produce a poster that was released for sale in every IKEA worldwide at the beginning of 2015 as part of a street art series. She has also collaborated with the Guess Foundation, Lyft and clothing company Mishka. In 2014 ELLE painted in Mexico City with All City Canvas, as well as painting in LA. She was flown out to paint in Israel and then to Malaysia with Urban Nation. She recently received sponsorship by the art material company Liquitex and is one of their brand ambassadors.

ELLE was included in "SURFACE," the book most recently published by phographer Soren Starbirdalongside the worlds top graffiti and street artists.

In 2015 ELLE spent a month in San Francisco painting murals with OneBrush Initiative and exhibiting at Rocha Gallery. Immediately afterwards ELLE kicked off a Liquitex sponsored European painting tour where she painted walls in every city she landed in, including Amsterdam, London, Vitry Sur Seine France- where C215 assisted in finding her a wall, and Berlin where she worked with Urban Nation for PM8 alongside Shepard Fairey, Cyrcle, The London Police, Word To Mother, D Face, and Maya Hayuk.

This October ELLE painted in Denver for Colorado Crush Mural festival and also in Reykjavik Iceland with Urban Nation in conjunction with Iceland Airwaves. She teamed up with the band Ulfur Ulfur to create a wall for the festival.

ELLE will be exhibiting at SAATCHI Gallery in London in February in the all female show XX curated by Yasha Young and Olly Walker alongside the show "Champagne Life."
