The sleep of reason breeds monsters; the artistic imagination, on the other hand, invariably bears more benign creatures - or at least chimeric creatures that embody myth and symbolism, rather than malice or sinister intent. Jason Limon's BLOOD NECTAR echoes the primitive memory of our ancestors - that collective unconscious haunted by life's precarious hold in this sphere of existence. Epic in composition, color, and size (the print will be a fitting 20" x 30"), the work shows a towering and amorphic "flower" shedding sanguinary tears into two cups held by a diminutive female form below it. Several thematic suppositions are inescapable, especially those that touch on religious imagery; it could be seen as a variation of Calvary or any number of familiar sacrificial motifs. It is to Limon's credit and skill that he imbues this dreamlike tableau with a neutral ambiguity. The viewer walks away from the painting with a hushed sense of awe and an unexpected feeling of empathy.
