"The original work came from a series of sketches trying to figure out the tone for Theatre Bizarre last October. There’s a lot of little elements throughout and I get tighter and tighter as I go. The original piece was pen and ink with different pieces of different little sketches, so to me this screenprint feels like more of an original piece of art than the original. Because of getting caught last year there was a big shift in content and context coming from the carnival into this secret society. John Dunivant is a painter and multimedia artist working in and around Detroit, Michigan. His most significant work, Theatre Bizarre, is an incomparably enveloping, art installation-interactive masquerade that began in the year 2000 as a completely illegal event in a neglected neighborhood of Detroit. It has since grown to become the largest immersive event of its kind in the world. He received a Kresge Fellowship in 2012 and was a recipient of a 2013 Detroit Arts Challenge grant through the Knight Foundation.
