"This painting is part of a recent body of work that is based on sharks, and my dreams of children swimming amongst them. I've been producing a series of anatomical paintings of sharks as reference for other paintings and murals.
The process for these anatomical profiles of sharks includes a loose feel, that comes out in the drips down the paper, at the same time it tightens up around the actual shark and in the detail of the skin and light reflections. I place the sharks on the top of the paper to maximize the space in which the drips fall. The drips have a second purpose of causing unease in the viewer, people inherently have a desire for a sense of neatness and order." - Kai'ili Kaulukukui

WOW! has grown into a global network of artists and organizes gallery shows, lecture series, schools for art and music, mural projects, a large creative space named Lana Lane Studios, concerts, and live art installations across the globe. The central event takes place during Valentine’s Day week in February in the Kaka’ako district of Honolulu, and brings over a hundred international and local artist together to create murals and other forms of art. A native of Hawai‘i Island, Kai‘ili Kaulukukui began drawing at a very young age, inspired by the Island’s natural beauty, abundant ocean life, and rich native culture. A classically trained oil painter, Kaulukukui studied fine art at the University of Hawai‘i and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Today, he works as a painter and muralist out of Lana Lane Studios in Kaka‘ako. As a muralist, his work can be seen in Hawai‘i and around the world, including at the Hawaii Convention Center, Bishop Museum, Sheraton Waikiki, POW! WOW! Hawaii (since 2012) and San Jose Learning Center (California), as well as in Cozumel, Mexico, and Napier, New Zealand for the Pangeaseed Foundation project, Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans.
