"As a jazz record collector and massive jazz enthusiast, there are very few cities more influential than Detroit – Jazz City – the birthplace and home of so many of Jazz's great artists and performers. From Phil Ranelin and Tribe Records, to Yusef Lateef, to JDilla and Slum Village, Detroit is a mecca for the artform. For this print I wanted to outwardly pay homage to my individual favorites from the vaults of the Motor City. So I decided to create my own personal A Great Day in Detroit (riffing off the legendary, iconic A Great Day In Harlem Photograph) using my signature Moster characters. Each Monster takes on a slight likeness to his or her jazz giant.....for colors, I dug into Detroit again, adopting the full color palette of the history of the Detroit Tigers which I have always admired as a tremendous range and combination of colors......oranges, tans, golds, warm greys and a strong navy blue. In my own personal twisted logic I freely associate that palette with the hues and tones of many of the great jazz album covers of the Impulse and Blue Note labels."  - Kevin Lyons

This September 15th-23rd, Murals In The Market will make a triumphant return to Detroit’s Historic Eastern Market as more than 50 local and international muralists will be painting live throughout the district over the course of 10 days in the second year of the city’s only international mural festival. 

The free public arts festival also will host dozens of events curated by participating artists including multiple art exhibitions, installations, live music, children’s workshops, community events, artists talks and more all throughout the Eastern Market District. All events will be free and open to the public as these local and international artists extend the market’s vibrant history of public murals.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Kevin Lyons is a creative director, designer, illustrator, and typographer who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Most recently, Lyons was a Partner and the Design Director at the juggernaut, anti-ad-agency-turned-ad-agency, Anomaly in New York City. In his previous lives Lyons has been an art director for SSUR, a creative at Nike, Design Director at Stussy, Art Director at Girl Skateboards, and Creative Director for both Tokion Magazine and Urban Outfitters. He often shows internationally and is published worldwide. His steady stream of clients include the Paris-based Colette, Nike, Converse, Adidas, DC Shoes, Girl, Google TV, Umbro, and Mighty Healthy. He is the founder and sole creative behind the veteran label, Natural Born.
