"There's an excitement that I imagine the small person at the lower part of the piece is experiencing - the vast newness that’s stretching before him as he is taking it in for the first time. He has a short way to go through this ancient place; up a sloped walkway and through two grand gates until he can enter the main grounds. And what lies beyond those walls? There are so many questions, that's part of what I wanted to share with this piece - a sense of awe in the newness of something truly older than memory. And also a nod to the journey of the hero ascending into the unknown.
The elements that make this scene special lie in the uncertainty and curiosity of all involved: you, me, the small person at the lower part of the image, and the question of “what lies beyond?” We are all embarking on an adventure here that will take us to a new place and a new purpose perhaps. That’s the genesis of the concept at least. This piece talks about new places, adventure, birth and rebirth. It’s an allegory of life and is even transitioning into the next phase of what we might call the afterlife."- Nathan Spoor
ABOUT Nathan Spoor:
Nathan Spoor is an artist and writer living in Los Angeles, CA, whose work is highly regarded by several prestigious collections and publications worldwide.
A practitioner and student of Suggestivism, Spoor’s paintings involve images of transition and growth; fluid narratives that chronicle a world rich with the mystery, joy, pain, and delicate balance of personal and spiritual evolution. Believing that continuous study of technique and process are critical to his own growth as an artist. No image or canvas is too precious to wipe, repaint, and even burn on his own journey to discovery and expression. In this way, Spoor makes a personal and transformative connection with each piece that for him lives on beyond the finished works.
With a writing style that shows an impressive passion and understanding of the arts in context, Spoor continues to bring challenging and informative text to readers of such internationally acclaimed publications as Hi Fructose, BL!SSS, Juxtapoz, Grand Central Press and The Surfer's Journal in an intelligent and educated fashion.
