Inner State Gallery is proud to announce Alchemy an expansive group exhibition curated by prolific multi-media artist Monica Canilao. The immersive site specific installation will feature a gallery wide takeover opening to the public on Friday, July 10th in Detroit’s Historic Eastern Market. Using the medieval forerunner of chemistry for inspiration, Canilao asked the group of over 40 artists to create both two and three dimensional works that will transform the gallery into a contemporary reflection of this well worn path through the eyes of the contributing artists.
“It is said that ‘alchemists’ relied heavily upon their dreams, inspirations and visions for guidance in perfecting their art. In order to protect their secrets, they recorded diaries filled with mysterious symbols rather than text. These symbols remain exceptionally potent for changing states of consciousness.” - Monica Canilao

Therin has, since childhood, been developing their own personal mythology, fascinated by tales passed on through the rise and fall of empires, legends saturated by with the quizzical human talent for mythiciszing the cycles of life. Brooks has built a body of work unrestricted by medium or scale, but rich in anthropological themes reflecting gender spectacle, memory, transcendentalism. While learning what is best in both living life and building it, their more recent works explore deeply emotional and personal themes. Hoping to bring exposure and dialogue to the often invisible nature of gender variance, the woks invite viewers to examine perception of gender and how we experience it both socially and personally. Every piece is part of a story with intent, a science fiction diary, some rich in allegorical symbolism carrying human experience with dignity, some using humor to handle spite or eroticism and cliche to carry a message with less composure. Each series of work, for the artist, is a collection of natural diplomacy, a sensual symbiosis, a love letter to the anti- hero, and hints of tales and legends to come.
