"If you look at the subtle wash over the actual painting, it actually makes the colours within pop more than if they were at the forefront. The idea being this is that you have to try just a little harder to see it all in context, whereas if the wash wasn't there, it would just be obvious. It's like I took time and effort to partially destroy the painting so people could really enjoy it. If that makes any sense?
The original piece was painted early this year specifically for the expo in Milan. It was done on canvas with a mixture of spray paint, emulsion (I think you call it buff paint in the States), bitumen (roof tar), and turps. I like watching the reactions of different substances with each other. I guess the trick is to become really good at knowing what will do what and with what and when. I'm getting there..." - Remi Rough
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
South London born and bred, Remi Rough has been breaking boundaries with the aid of a spray can and a paintbrush for almost 3 decades. Transcending the traditional and somewhat idealized vision of a graffiti writer as he is passionate and unforgiving in his creative progression.
He moved from the streets to the galleries with his debut art show in 1989 and has since gone on to exhibit in London, Paris, Perth, Tokyo, Santander, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Vancouver, Hong Kong, Berlin, Ibiza and more cities dotted around the globe.
However, he still keeps his finger in the streets, taking part in New York’s Underbelly Project in 2010 and painting numerous murals around the world. As Arrested Motion wrote: “Remi is that rare breed of artist whose work you can equally enjoy in an outdoor setting and also in a gallery/home without it feeling awkward and out of context.”
