During the “Great March” that took place in Detroit in 1963, Martin Luther King spoke about racism and ultimately expresses his dreams about freedom and equality among the white and black people.
For much of the 20th century, urban redevelopment and planning in Detroit has been intertwined with people of all races, bringing together undiscovered gems and new creative’s residing on the same turf. MLK’S dream has become my reality as an African American Woman born and raised in Detroit.
To better understand challenges of the past and present, along with revitalization plans for Detroit’s Future the people of Detroit have overcome Racial Conflict and has embraced Racial Unity, and is Redeveloping for the whole of the city.
In my piece “Spirit Builders” I create Martin Luther Kings “Dream” come true.
Sculpted by Fredericks in the mid- 1950s, the sculpture known as “The Spirit of Detroit” was then and now known as thee monumental Detroit City symbol.
By recreated the sculpture pulling itself out of its hole of past hardships and segregation extending its right arm high strengthened by unity and equality built upon daily I give the audience a glimpse of Detroit citizens embracing each other no matter of skin color, class, or social status to build a brighter future.
The spirit is Detroit, Detroit is its people, let’s all show the world what Detroit equality looks like today and for the future.
