"This piece references Albrecht Dürer's "Betende Hände" (praying hands), an image that has become iconic within the gang/prison culture. Prisoners turn to religion in the desperation brought on by incarceration. The skeletal hands represent the grasp of death that is a common end within the prison system, regardless of the severity of sentencing. The shadow of prison is only mirrored by the shadow of death. The golden cuffs are referring to the wealth that is wrought by the prison industrial complex by incarcerating the poor and underrepresented." - Jesse Hazelip
Jesse Hazlip was born in 1977 and raised in the mountain desert town of Cortez, CO amidst Navajo and Ute Nation territory. At the age of 13 he relocated to Southern California and into an environment so vastly different from that of his childhood. It was there that Hazelip took root in the world of graffiti. Through his involvement with this underground sub-culture, Hazelip gained an aesthetic and technique that is woven into his artwork alongside the imagery and history of his childhood. Hazelip received his BFA from Art Center College of Design and currently resides on the West Coast. Hazelip has shown extensively at galleries throughout the United States and internationally, and his work resides in numerous private collections.
